So what is “Drop In Derby”?
Our “Drop In Derby” sessions are run for anyone wanting to skate or learn roller derby. There are no attendance requirements or prior skating skills required. The only requirement is that you are over 18 years old and have your own kit.
BRD’s Drop In Derby runs every Thursday evening from 6-8pm at
Ashton Park Sports Centre
Updates can be found on our Facebook page.
How much does it cost?
The 2 hour session costs £5.
What kit do I need?
We have kit available to use during our sessions. The kit is given out on a first come first served basis, so arrive early to avoid disappointment.
I’ve never skated before, what should I expect?
If you have never skated before or are still mastering the basics of skating, stopping and turning – don’t worry! – our session helpers are there purely to make sure that you have help in feeling secure on your skates.
Before you are able to skate you will need to read through and sign a disclaimer acknowledging that you accept the risk that you might damage yourself when you strap wheels to your feet! Once you have given us your details and signed the form you’ll be able to take part in the sessions. We’ll teach you the basics of roller derby through coached drills as well as fun “skill share” sessions with other skaters.
I’ve skated roller derby before and want to attend
Great! Speak to the session leader or helpers and join in with what you feel comfortable with.
Is roller derby just for girls? I’m a guy and want to skate!
Drop In Derby is for anyone who wants to skate roller derby. The only requirement is that you are over 18 years old.
What’s the relationship between Drop In Derby and Bristol Roller Derby?
Drop In Derby sessions are run by Bristol Roller Derby. Anyone interested in learning skate and play roller derby is welcome to come along to Drop In sessions. If you have fun and want to pursue roller derby further then you can start your minimum skills which are the very basic skating skills required for roller derby (we also recommend watching a lot of roller derby bouts, reading up on the rules, and joining Bristol Roller Derby as an NSO to really learn the game!).
If you would rather referee roller derby, then still come to skate and you can chat to some of Team Zebra while you’re there!
So does this mean I can go straight into a roller derby team?
When you are stable and safe you can take a series of skill tests (a bit like a driving license for skaters) known as minimum skills. Once you have completed all of these then you will be eligible to join one of our teams! This usually takes 6-12 months.
I don’t want to skate roller derby competitively, I just want to skate for fun!
Well then you’ve found the perfect place! Drop In Derby is a place where everyone can skate, share and work on skills and generally just have a laugh.
