Skater of the Month – February

Each month we are going to share with you the Bristol Roller Derby Skater of the Month. The Skater of the Month is decided on by the coaching team and awarded to a skater they feel deserves recognition for their dedication at training.

Gremilyn M32

We a bit late to it this time, but we are pleased to announce that for February, Skater of the Month was awarded to Gremilyn, #M32. Grem, as she’s affectionately known, has been awarded it for “huge strides in understanding the game strategically and consistent good performance and positivity in training and competitive games”.

If you want to meet Grem then head down to Drop-In Derby which she coordinates to get new skaters into the league. Or, why not watch her in action with Bristol Roller Derby A Team at this weekend’s British Champs game against Brighton Rockers?

SKATE OUT

There was a lot of excitement about this game throughout the league, as it was the first time our A-team had played in a tournament. We filled up a big fun-bus to London with the team, subs, bench crew and about 15 supporters, who were bolstered on our arrival in London by ex-BRD, now LRG skater Tess Robinson.

Our game was the second in a double header, so the Bristol players were able to watch some of the Brighton/Seaside bout before disappearing for warm-ups and secret preparations (apparently involving dragons) at half time. We had been warned that the floor of the venue, a painted concrete surface, was currently particularly slippery: it was evident when watching the start of the Brighton/Seaside game that some players were having trouble adapting to the floor.

BRD Break for Christmas 2014

It’s the end of term for BRD. The Christmas holidays were looming so we spent the weekend celebrating the start of the festive season the way we know best – playing derby!

ADHD took on Daughters of Anarchy in a battle that went down to the last 20secs of the last jam of the game – absolute nail biter! Congrats to DOA – it really could have gone either way!

And the girls of BRD took on the boys of Bristol Vice Quad. The boys may have had size and strength on their side, but it didn’t stop the girls putting up a good fight! Well done do the boys!!!

At the end of the day, it was time to party. And boy do BRD know how to party. Afte

r an amazing buffet, end of year awards, secret santa, epic dancing (Saturday Night anyone?), and german leg wrestling tournament, we all decided we loved each other more than anything and got a bit soppy.

Here’s to 2015!! Lots of exciting things to come for BRD including our involvement in the British Championships which looks set to be amazing. Keep checking back here for all your BRD news in the new year!

Derby Crazy Love Fundraiser at the Cube!

Derby Crazy Love Fundraiser
The Cube Cinema, Bristol, Thursday 21st August, 8pm

After our awesome trip to Dublin the Bristol Roller Derby girls and boys hung up their skates for a bit of rest for the past couple of weeks. Kit washed, bearings cleaned, and we’re all desperate to get back on the track and play some derby!

And what better way to celebrate the start of a new derby season than by holding a film-tastic fundraiser for all the family!  BRD have teamed up with the Cube cinema to bring you a screening of Derby Crazy Love, a film taking viewers inside the adrenaline-filled world of Roller Derby.

After the screening there will be a Q&A with skaters, referees and officials. You can find out how to join us and learn to skate through our Drop In Derby sessions. There will be merchandise and cake for sale, and our very own Chick Dastardly will be DJing in the bar afterwards.

The event takes place on Thursday 21st August, 8pm. For tickets and more information, visit the Cube website: http://www.cubecinema.com/programme/event/id/7500/

DOA Beat Smash Vandals to Win 2014 Intraleague Tournament!

154 Daughters of Anarchy – 150 Smash Vandals

Saturday 22nd February, Thornbury Leisure Centre

Two games down and there was all to play for in the final match of Bristol Roller Derby’s Intraleague season. A win from Daughters of Anarchy would see them lift the home season trophy; a win from Smash Vandals would mean a perfect three-way tie. And so far the season has taught us that you can’t predict what will happen in a BRD home team bout!

Smash Vandals had a strong start, with their jammers consistently smashing through the pack to get lead jammer. But DOA were putting up some tough walls and the Vandals could only extend their lead to 7-16. But after a flurry of penalties and some power jam swaps, the Vandals had a more comfortable lead at half time: 34-61.

However, after last week’s ‘game of two halves’, with DOA convincingly snatching a win from the Die Hards in the second half, it was clear this bout wasn’t over.

Not long after the second half started DOA had a spurt of power jam action. Among others, Sno’ and Ophelia racked up some easy points and DOA sneaked into the lead 80-73. *sings power jam song in head*.

A few more power jams to both teams, some lead changes, a number of penalties, and some unbearably exciting action and there was no way of guessing which way the game would go. These BRD girls were working their shiny-hot-panted arses off!

In the end, a confusing penalty involving an illegal star pass meant the final outcome was delayed as the refs took their time to correct the scores. It could have gone either way, but the Daughters snatched the win 154-150 to make them intraleague champions!

Congratulations to the DOA girls for being this year’s champs! And also massive congratulations to the Vandals and Die Hards who showed-off their awesome skills on the track. Lots of our Fresh Meat graduates lost their bout virginity and showed that BRD have an incredibly talented league this year!

Finally, we couldn’t have put on the intraleague season without hard work from our refs, our NSOs, everyone in the league, and our very vocal supporters – THANKS TO ALL!!!

Roll up, roll up! Tickets Now On Sale For March’s Double Header!

After an action-packed intraleague season in January and February, the girls are ready to put home team rivalries behind them and stick it to the opposition rather than each other!

530

The A team ended 2013 ranked 27th in Europe, so what better way to open the 2014 season than with an international bout? Paris Rollergirls are ranked just one place above them in 26th, making for a nail-biter of a game where every point will count.

The B team have the memory of being beaten by just 4 points in the last bout of 2013 to vanquish, and with the Birmingham Blitz Dames B team ranked 15 places above them at 120, they’ll be fighting to win every jam.

If you’re sick of being soaked, and are looking for a great value way to entertain the kids, then why not give roller derby a try? A fun, fast-paced sport on skates, the venue has a fully licenced bar, café and our very own players run the ever popular cake stall!

The action takes place at the WISE Campus of SGS College in Stoke Gifford on 16th March 2014. Doors open at 11:30 with the first bout starting at 12:30, and the second at 15:00. The fun ends at approximately 17:30 with the customary skater awards.

Each year Bristol Roller Derby nominate one charity to support – in 2014, BRD will be supporting Off the Record, so look out for collection buckets and charity events throughout the year!  To find out more about Off the Record, visit: http://otrbristol.org.uk
